چکیده
Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), large scale structure (LSS) and standard candles such as Type 1a Supernovae (SN) each place different constraints on the values of cosmological parameters. We assume an inflationary Cold Dark Matter model with a cosmological constant, in which the initial density perturbations in the universe are adiabatic. We discuss the parameter degeneracies inherent in interpreting CMB or SN data, and derive their orthogonal nature. We then present our preliminary results of combining CMB and SN likelihood functions. The results of combining the CMB and IRAS 1.2 Jy survey information are given, with marginalised confidence regions in the H 0 , Ω m , b IRAS and Q rms−ps directions assuming n = 1, Ω Λ + Ω m = 1 and Ω b h 2 = 0.024. Finally we combine all three likelihood functions and find that the three data sets are consistent and suitably orthogonal, leading to tight constraints on

Geometrical and statistical properties of polarization of CMB are analyzed. Singular points of the vector field which describes CMB polarization are found and classified. Statistical distribution of the singularities is studied. A possible signature of tensor perturbations in CMB polarization is discussed. For a further analysis of CMB statistics Minkowski functionals are used, which present a ...

Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) are discussed, with particular emphasis on current ground-based experiments and on future satellite, balloon and interferometer experiments. Observational techniques and the effects of contaminating foregrounds are highlighted. Recent CMB data is used with large scale structure (LSS) data to constrain cosmological parameters and the compleme...

Models of black hole accretion disks are reviewed, with an emphasis on the theory of hard X-ray production. The following models are considered: i) standard, ii) super-critical, iii) two-temperature, and iv) disk+corona. New developments have recently been made in hydrodynamical models of accretion and in phenomenological radiative models fitting the observed X-ray spectra. Attempts to unify th...

We used a newtonian SPH (smooth-particle hydrodynamics) code to follow the final stages of evolution of a coalescing binary system of a neutron star and a black hole. We find that the outcome of the “merger” is very sensitive to the equation of state describing the neutron star. A neutron star with a soft equation of state (polytrope with index Γ = 5/3) is completely disrupted, and a fairly lar...

Following a series of deep observations of the Galactic Bulge region performed with the Wide Field Cameras telescopes on board BeppoSAX, it has been possible to study throughout a long time period a number of persistent X-ray sources. We report on the behaviour of GRS 1758-258, an X-ray binary suggested as a black hole candidate on the basis of its timing and spectral characteristics. The sourc...
